The theme is Getting To Know You! I was participating in a volunteer activity at church and I observed two other volunteers catching up on family, places they have been or are going. I realized then that I really don’t know much about the other people in this group. We meet, we assemble things, we hand out things but I never seem to find the time to sit down with them and just talk. I have a feeling some of you also feel that way. There are some of us who have been around from the beginning and have gotten to know each other and then there are those of us that joined during this pandemic and have not had that time together. I propose we do Virtual Lunches!! In the old, pre-pandemic days we could actually have lunch in person, but now we have Zoom! What I would like to do is contact you, a few at a time, and arrange a Virtual Lunch on Zoom! We have our food, we talk about our families, what our interests are, what we are doing, what we want to do, etc. Alternatively, if a group of members want to get together to have a virtual lunch or just to talk to catch up, let me know. I purchased an unlimited subscription to Zoom for our Chapter and would be glad to share that with you. And we can also use it for our meetings instead of using Patricia’s personal subscription, let me know if you need to schedule a meeting on Zoom and I will give you the information. So look for an email from me in the next weeks, months…..as long as this darn pandemic limits our getting together in person.
Stay healthy, stay involved, stay in touch and I will “see” you on Zoom soon!
Our annual baby shower has been rebranded as a Sip and See to adapt to the pandemic. This will be a drive-thru only event; we invite our members and the community to come by and say hi!
If you would like to support our layette program, please peruse our registry at:
Your donations will directly benefit our current Layette program at PediPlace, as well as the expansion of this beloved program to other organizations in the community. Layettes are the signature program of all National Christ Child Society chapters across the country.
Each layette bag contains newborn essentials (diapers, wipes, onesies, etc), or what we like to call a "baby shower in a bag".
Second Annual Christ Child Fiesta--POSTPONED
Planning is underway for the second annual Christ Child Fiesta, now scheduled for September 2021 at St. Philip! Keep checking our website (www.christchildsocietydfw.org) for details, or email Pam Sheridan at pamsheridan@gmail.com..
Calling all you talented members: In preparation for the Fiesta, the Fundraising Committee needs a creative person to be in charge of the decorations and another person to be in charge of the Silent Auction. Remember, too, that you will not be working alone on these two tasks, but rather, will have help from other members.
LITERACY NEEDS YOU!
We have opportunities for you!! Our Literacy projects are expanding and we could use your help. Currently, we have needs in:
1. Tutoring
You will meet virtually weekly or bi-weekly with your student(s) and help them with reading and comprehension. Students come from Central and Mill Street Elementary Schools.
2. Mentoring
Do you have 30 minutes to show a child that they are valued? That is the essence of mentoring. You will meet virtually weekly or bi-weekly; content is provided if you are unsure as to how to spend that time! Examples of a mentoring session include completing worksheets together, reading a book to your student, playing a game, etc. Students come from Central and Mill Street Elementary Schools.
Future opportunities for all members to help:
Books in Bloom: We will be planning a day for literacy-related activities using beloved books as each station's theme for the students of Central Elementary. A SignUpGenius will be generated for volunteers for the event--please consider helping!! Please see below graphic for more info.
Summer Mobile Library: We are bringing the library to the kids this summer! More details coming soon.
All programs require clearance from Communities in Schools. If you have not completed the CIS forms to volunteer, please email Nellie Apodoaca: napodaca@yahoo.com
WE (STILL) NEED YOUR HELP
We are looking for a new VP of Membership for our chapter--this person will be the initial contact for prospective members and maintain a file of basic membership-related information (dues, current committee, etc), as well as be a member of our Board. Please contact Suzanne Jasinski if this person could be YOU: suzannejasinski@outlook.com
This is a great opportunity to be the face of our wonderful organization--if you have had a good experience with our group, please consider this role. Adding members is vital to us being able to continue to do our good work in the community!
